Beer Regatta — Dates, Events & What to Expect

By Mikey @vanlifebymikey ·

Introduction

The Beer Regatta is one of the most beloved events on the East Devon calendar — a full week of sailing races, live music, beach activities and village celebrations centred on Beer’s famous shingle beach.

Held every summer, the Regatta brings the whole village to life and draws visitors from across the Jurassic Coast and beyond. Below you’ll find the dates for each year, what to expect across the week, and how to make the most of it during your stay in Beer.

Beer Regatta Week is one of the highlights of the summer calendar in Beer. Rather than being a single busy day, it’s a full week of events that gradually build atmosphere across the village, centred around the beach, the fishing heritage, and a strong sense of local community.

If you’re visiting Beer during Regatta Week, you’ll notice the village feels livelier than usual — but still relaxed, friendly, and very much true to itself. It’s one of the best times to experience Beer at its most social without it ever feeling overwhelming.

What Is Beer Regatta Week?

Beer Regatta Week is an annual village celebration that usually takes place in mid-August and has been part of Beer’s history for well over a century. Flags, bunting, and activity spread across the village, with the beach and Lawrence Street forming the heart of the celebrations.

The week blends traditional maritime events with community games, family activities, and evening entertainment. It’s informal, welcoming, and easy to dip in and out of, which suits the natural pace of Beer perfectly.

Rowing Races & the Heart of the Week

The rowing and sailing races are at the centre of Regatta Week and reflect Beer’s strong fishing and maritime heritage. Boats launch directly from the beach, backed by the cliffs and fishing boats that still work these waters today.

You don’t need to understand the racing to enjoy it. Much of the pleasure comes from standing on the beach, chatting with others, and watching the village come together around the shoreline.

Events Across the Week

One of the reasons Regatta Week works so well is the variety of events spread across several days. Activities typically include treasure hunts, angling competitions, beach games, quizzes, scavenger hunts, pavement art, and live music.

A highlight for many visitors is the traditional barrel-rolling event, where teams race barrels along the street — a quirky, much-loved part of the week that always draws a crowd.

Regatta Day & Fireworks

The biggest day of the week is usually Thursday, known locally as Regatta Day. This is when the main races, fancy dress competitions, land-based events, and parades take place.

The day often ends with a fireworks display over the beach, providing a fitting finale to the busiest and most celebratory day of the week. It’s a special sight when viewed from the seafront or surrounding cliffs.

Why Regatta Week Works So Well in Beer

Beer’s size is one of the reasons Regatta Week feels so enjoyable. Everything is walkable, events are close together, and it’s easy to move between the beach, village, and quieter spots without planning too far ahead.

This makes the week ideal for relaxed visits. You can enjoy the atmosphere without committing to every event, which is exactly how we tend to experience it ourselves.

A Great Week for Families

Regatta Week is particularly family-friendly. With activities centred around the beach and village, it’s easy to spend an hour or two watching events before heading off for food, beach time, or a rest.

If you’re visiting with children, this pairs really well with our guide to Visiting Beer with Children: A Family Guide, helping keep days flexible and low-pressure.

Making Regatta Week Part of a Longer Stay

Regatta Week works best as part of a longer visit rather than the sole focus of a trip. You can combine events with coastal walks, beach days, and slower afternoons without feeling rushed.

It fits naturally into relaxed stays like 7 Days in Beer, Devon: A Slow Coastal Itinerary, where village events sit alongside downtime rather than replacing it.

When Does Beer Regatta Week Take Place?

Dates vary slightly each year, but Beer Regatta Week is traditionally held in mid-August, usually running from Saturday through to the following Friday, with Regatta Day falling mid-week.

If your visit overlaps with it, checking timings locally once you arrive is the best way to decide which events you’d like to catch.

Why We Love Regatta Week

For us, Regatta Week captures what Beer does best — tradition without fuss, community without exclusivity, and events that feel woven into everyday village life rather than staged for visitors.

Whether you watch a single race or enjoy the atmosphere across several days, it’s one of those weeks that makes Beer feel especially memorable.
